Celebrating 250 years of Baccarat; Crystal Legend

Categories : Exhibitions and Museums, published on : 10/10/14

Baccarat; Crystal Legend is an exhibition to mark the 250th anniversary of the world’s most celebrated maker of fine crystal ware. Held in the Grandes Galeries of the Petit Palais from October 15th until January 4th, this exhibition is a testimony to the skill of the Baccarat designers and craftsmen. At Les Plumes Hotel we appreciate such exquisite and rare beauty, and so we are more than pleased to recommend this event.

A display of the consummate craftsmanship of Baccarat

The Baccarat company can trace its history back to the 18th century, when King Louis XV agreed to the founding of a glassworks in the Lorraine region town of Baccarat. The following century saw the company’s first royal commission, as they began to build an international reputation for beautifully crafted work such as quality stemware, chandeliers and perfume bottles. Today the Baccarat brand is synonymous with high quality craftsmanship.

Crystal Legend will be the first retrospective devoted to Baccarat since the bicentennial exhibition mounted at the Louvre in 1964. Appropriately for the setting of the Petit Palais, which was built for the 1900 Universal Exposition, the presentation will include designs made by the company for the large Parisian exhibitions that took place between 1823 and 1927. Some 500 pieces, mostly from the Baccarat collection, but also gathered from the Orsay Museum, the Louvre and other places, will be grouped in accordance with their stylistic affinities or context. Archival materials including drawings, many on display for the first time, will help to demonstrate how the creations were developed. There will be many beautiful sights to see, and the exhibition will conclude with a series of superb chandeliers hung in the Galerie d’Honneur.
