Monumenta 2014, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov at the Grand Palais

Categories : Exhibitions and Museums, published on : 5/6/14

Monumenta 2014 is a literally massive occasion in the art world. Since 2007 the Paris based art event Monumenta has been inviting internationally acclaimed artists to create truly monumental art installations to occupy the nave of the Grand Palais. Previous years have seen the work of Christian Boltanski, Richard Serra, Anish Kapoor and Daniel Buren. This year the Russian born artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov fill 13,500 square metres of the majestic monument with their awe inspiring creation, The Strange City.

Months in preparation, The Strange City draws upon influences from the Renaissance, Romanticism and modern science to evoke a Utopian urban landscape. The visitor can wander around the eight large structures to absorb the atmosphere of tranquillity and gaze in awe and wonder at this representation of the human condition and mankind‘s quest for something beyond. This is a true work of art, subtly altering our perceptions and helping us to view the world from a different perspective.

You can explore this installation at your own pace or enjoy the benefits of a guided tour revealing the secrets of this exceptional conceptual work. Fun and exciting guided tours for children are also available, enabling them to enjoy a great time while simultaneously stimulating their appreciation of art.
